Did you remember vision 2020? I gathered that vision 2020 was launched on February 18, 1999 by the World Health Organization together with more than 20 international non-governmental organisations. It was aimed making the world a better place for all to live. It was aimed at making opportunities available for everyone.
In Nigeria, it was believed that by 2020 the country will be one of the 20 largest economies in the world, able to consolidate its leadership role in Africa and establish itself as a significant player in the global economic and political arena. It had a committee charged with putting strategies in place to make it a reality.
Everywhere it was vision 2020. Everybody was looking up to vision 2020. Our dream was that by the year 2020, we will have better life in Nigeria, good jobs for, good health system in the country, better roads, constant power supply, eradication of deadly disease and everything good for all Nigerians.
It was a tall and big dream. It was embraced by all Nigerians and everybody prayed and looked towards it. But the year 2020 has come as one of the worst years in thee history of Nigeria. Those who started are no more talking about it. Nobody in government has made mention of it since early January till now.
Rather than bringing good news, job opportunities, and good health to all, it has come as one of the most sorrowful years for many. A year that thousands of lives were lost. A year that a deadly disease unknown to many ravaged humanity and brought medical science to stands till. Doctors were overwhelmed with great challenge that threatened their wealth of experience.
Year 2020 brought death, pain, sorrow, economic and social lock down, educational lock down, entertainment and sports lockdown, transport lockdown. It’s a year that an unknown disease, coronavirus came and killed thousands of people all over the world. Powerful nations were brought to their knees. The United States, United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, Israel, Italy and many others were reduced to nothing. Their knowledge of chemical weapons could not be used. And their people died like flies.
In Nigeria, vision 2020 besides the lockdown, the disease and deaths occasioned by the deadly virus, President Muhammadu Buhari has inflicted more pains on Nigerians by the recent increase in the price of fuel. This is when people are suffering from the pains of the coronavirus. Check it, vision 2020 is a disaster. The proponents were blind to realities. Maybe they set up those committees just to make money for themselves and not for the good of Nigerians.
