Edo state Governor Godwin Obaseki has called on the state commissioner of police to provide security for protesting youths. The youths are part of the #EndSARS protesters which started last week in the country and is spreading fast into all states across the country.
As the youths were protesting in Benin City, reports emerged that hoodlums filtered into their midst and killed some of the youths as there are no security officials with them. Reports got to the governor and he was very furious that unarmed youths were killed by hoodlums.
Rather than calling the police commissioner to provide protection for the protesters, the governor went to twitter to issue commands to the state commissioner of police.
Read his tweets: “I have just learnt that hoodlums are attacking #EndSARS protesters, who have conducted themselves peacefully in Benin City. I extend condolences to the victims of the attack, including those who lost their lives and others who were injured by the thugs.
“It is disheartening that anyone would attack a peaceful assembly of young people, who are expressing genuine concerns to #EndSARS, police brutality and intimidation in their own country.
“I hereby call on the Police Command in the state to get out on the streets and provide adequate security for the #EndSARS protesters and ensure that no one is harassed in the course of exercising their rights in Edo State.”
Reading through the governor’s tweet calling the police commissioner on twitter, youths responded
One Omontese Lucky Iyoha said: “The CP Edo is not on twitter, the right word to use it is”I have called on the CP to ensure safety of the protesters”
Another said: “Don’t mind him. I’m so upset. With that nonsense smiling face on his dp. These governors are really misbehaving.”
