The Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action following the circulation of a viral video depicting officers engaging in extortion along the Benin bypass.
In a statement released on its official Facebook page, the Force reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for corruption and unprofessional conduct.
The six officers involved in the incident, including a Chief Superintendent of Police who served as their supervising officer, were summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
There, they appeared before the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who strongly condemned their behavior, describing it as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”
In response to the incident, disciplinary procedures have been initiated. All six officers have been formally queried, and orderly room trials have begun for the Inspectors directly implicated in the footage.
The Nigeria Police Force emphasized that it remains committed to maintaining professionalism, integrity, and accountability within its ranks.
It reassured the public that misconduct by officers will be met with appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with established procedures.
“This action underscores our dedication to reform and restoring public confidence in the police,” the statement read.
The video, which has sparked outrage across social media, shows officers allegedly extorting money from motorists — a practice the Force leadership says it is determined to eliminate.
