You can’t escape punishment, group tells former Nigerian governor

A prominent civil society group, the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has publicly urged former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai to halt what it describes as diversionary political tactics and engage directly with ongoing investigations by national anti-corruption and security agencies.

In a statement issued by DWI’s Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, the organisation said El-Rufai is under active scrutiny by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) over serious allegations linked to his time in office.

The group stressed that “no individual is above the law,” calling for full accountability and adherence to legal processes.

DWI also expressed concern over El-Rufai’s admission that he breached the communication lines of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), describing this as a violation of established national security protocols.

The group argued that attempts to shift public focus away from the investigations including explanations involving reports on the importation of a toxic substance serve only to undermine the seriousness of the allegations and national security.

“The rule of law is the bedrock of our democracy,” the statement said, urging authorities to accelerate investigations while safeguarding due process.

It also called on all citizens to remain vigilant and committed to transparency and accountability as foundational democratic principles.

Analysts and other critics have echoed similar concerns, advising El-Rufai to address financial and procedural questions surrounding his governorship directly rather than engaging in what some describe as tactics that divert public attention from substantive allegations.
