Given the rising spate of insecurity across the various states in the country, the Delta State House of Assembly, on Wednesday said it is working in synergy with the state government to forestall the trend in the state.
Speaker of the State legislature, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor who gave the assurance when he received the executive of the Delta State council of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) hinted that the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is already on top of it.
Allaying the fears raised by the leadership of the State council of NUJ over the suspected infiltration of some criminally-minded individuals into the State, the Speaker said that the State legislature, in collaboration with the executive, would swiftly engage the security agencies towards forestalling any unfortunate occurrence.
“In the area of peace and security as you stated in your address, let me assure you that the State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori is already on top of it. He will do everything needed to ensure that the State remains peaceful and investment haven for investors.
“As a state, we will continue to work on the various security agencies to ensure that the State remains peaceful. So, Deltans should be calm and relaxed because, your fears are already taken care of”, Guwor stressed.
While thanking the leadership of the State council of NUJ for the visit, the Speaker who is also the treasurer, council of Speakers of State legislatures in Nigeria, said that the Delta State 8th Assembly under his watch, is working assiduously towards promoting bills that would impact positively on the lives of the people.
To achieve this, the Speaker said that the House would continue to partner relevant stakeholders, particularly the media in driving its vision, mission and agenda.
He, therefore, enjoined the media to sustain its support with the State legislature just as he stressed the need for robust and efficient reportage of activities of the State legislature.
The Speaker who was joined by principal officers of the House to receive the visitors, charged members of the State NUJ to uphold their professional integrity by ensuring accurate and balanced reportage.
Earlier, the Chairman of the union, comrade Oyowe Churchill told the Speaker that they were in his office to congratulate him on his emergence as Speaker of the State legislature.
The NUJ boss, also, used the forum to inform the speaker of fears currently being nursed by Deltans following what he described as the rising spate of insecurity across various states in the country.
According to comrade Oyowe, the fears is being heightened as some “unknown” persons who could hardly be identified by residents are already infiltrating into the State.
He called on the State legislature to liaise with the executive to forestall possible breach in the peace and security of the State.
