Two soldiers attached to the sector 1 command, Operation ‘Delta Safe’, Effurun Barracks, were reported to have died in an explosion which occurred during their raid of a notorious illegal bunkering hideout in Sokobolor community, Warri South West local government area of Delta state.
Some soldiers who were part of the team during the raid operation who narrowly escaped death in the tragic incident which occurred last week Thursday, however, sustained some degree of burnt injuries from the explosion which caught them unaware.
It was reported that they were immediately moved to a military hospital in Effurun, where they are currently receiving treatment and are said to be recuperating from the severe burnt damage done to their body by the fire.
Investigations carried out revealed that the soldiers who were on a special assignment to destroy identified locations of illegal refineries along the Delta creeks, invaded one of the most dreaded hideout in Sokobolor community, Warri South West council area in an early morning operation to destroy the location.
It was learnt that they had successfully rounded off the area and set the entire place ablaze and the fire was raging one of them fired a tank where the stolen crude was stored, it was the moment the bullet hit the tank that the explosion triggered a wide fire which covered the entire area occurred.
It was learnt that the deceased soldiers were those standing very close to the scene of the incident while those soldiers standing a bit far off, sustained various degrees of burnt injuries.
Efforts to get official reactions from military sources could not yield any positive result as at the time of filling this report as the military authorities were not forthcoming to the inquiries put forward to them.
