The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, said he had met with the leadership of at least 15 commercial banks since President Buhari announced his latest directive on the new naira policy.

Emefiele’s visit to the State House comes hours after the President, in a televised message, announced that only the old N200 note would remain a legal tender until April 10, 2023.

He said the meeting with the bank executives was to ensure an ample supply of the old N200 notes to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians.

Buhari had earlier on Monday, said the old N500 & N1,000 banknotes were no longer legal tender, however, said the old N200 note would be legal tender for the next 60 days, till April 10, 2023, while urging Nigerians to deposit their old N500 &1000 notes with the CBN.

“Let me re-assure Nigerians, that strengthening our economy, enhancing security, and blockage of leakages associated with illicit financial flows remain the top priorities of our administration. And I shall remain committed to my oath of protecting and, advancing the interest of Nigerians and the nation, at all times.”
