West African nation maintains top spot as continent’s demographic powerhouse, with population projected to keep soaring

Nigeria has once again secured its position as Africa’s most populous nation, with estimated population figures hitting 242.4 million in 2026, according to Worldometer data released Wednesday.

The numbers place Africa’s giant firmly ahead of Ethiopia (138.9 million) and Egypt (120.1 million), as the continent continues its reign as the world’s fastest-growing region.

Africa’s Top 10 Most Populous Nations in 2026:

2 Ethiopia 138.9M 2.53%
3 Egypt 120.1M 1.47%
4 DR Congo 116.5M 3.21%
5 Tanzania 72.6M 2.86%
6 South Africa 65.5M 1.09%

What’s Driving the Numbers?

With a median age of just 18 years and fertility rate of 4.2 children per woman, Nigeria’s youthful demographic continues to expand rapidly—adding nearly 5 million people in the past year alone.

However, these figures remain estimates, as Nigeria’s last official census was conducted in 2006, when the population stood at 140.4 million.

The Bigger Picture

Africa’s population is projected to exceed 2.5 billion by 2050, driven by:

· Youthful populations across the continent
· High fertility rates
· Improving healthcare systems

This demographic surge is expected to reshape markets, attract investment, and transform labor dynamics across the continent, with Nigeria positioned as a key driver of Africa’s economic future.
