NECO releases breakdown of 2023 SSCE results, says 1.196m candidates sat for exam, 737,000 passed with 5 credits

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2023 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results with 61.6 per cent of candidates who sat for the examinations passing with five credits and above including Mathematics and English language subjects.

Releasing the results on Tuesday, the Registrar/Chief Executive of the Council, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, said a total 1,196,985 candidates sat for the examinations.

He said out of the total number of candidates who sat for the examinations, 737,308 passed with five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics subjects, representing 61.60 per cent of 1,196,985 candidates and were qualified to gain admission into tertiary institutions.

He said 93 schools were found to be involved in whole-school (mass) cheating while 52 Supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding, and abetting of malpractices during the examinations.

Wushishi said that the erring schools will be invited to the Council for discussion afterwhich appropriate sanctions will be applied.

According to him, out of the total 1,196,985 candidates, 616,398 males and 580,587 females sat for the examinations, adding that 1,543 candidates with special needs also sat for the examinations.

“Number of candidates with Special Needs is 1,542 which includes 913 candidates with hearing impairment, 162 candidates with visual impairment, 103 candidates with Albanism, 61 candidates with Autism, 149 candidates with low vision, and 154 candidates with Adermatoglyphia which are candidates with no fingerprints.

“737,308 representing 61.60 percent Candidates passed with five Credits and above, 1,013,611 representing 84.68 percent candidates had five Credits irrespective of English and Mathematics,” he stated.

LEADERSHIP reports that the 2023 SSCE (Internal) was conducted from Monday, July 10 to Friday, August 11, 2023 and the Marking Exercise took place from Wednesday, August 30 to Friday, September 15, 2023.

This year, the result was released 58 days after the last examination was written.

The NECO Registrar further said the reports the Council has received so far indicated that the 2023 SSCE Internal has been certified the best in recent times.

“This year, we have designed the analyses in a variety of ways that will help awaken Stakeholders to the realization of their true position in the national sphere.

“Our aim is to stimulate a healthy discourse towards improvement. This is also in line with our mandate that empowers us to conduct a Standard National Assessment of educational performance at Junior and Senior Secondary School levels.

“The highlights are as follows:
Number of candidates registered for the examination is 1,205,888, representing 621,084 males and 584,804 Females,” he added.

He noted that candidates can now access their results on NECO website: www.neco.gov.ng, using their examination registration numbers.
