Fresh details have emerged about a brutal attack by suspected terrorists on Tuesday in the rural communities of Woro and Nuku in Kwara State, central Nigeria.
Local authorities report that at least 75 civilians were killed after refusing to submit to the armed group’s demands.
According to a relative of Woro’s traditional ruler, assailants on motorcycles surrounded the villages around 5 p.m. before opening fire from multiple directions.
Attempts by residents to escape were met with gunfire, and others who surrendered were reportedly tied up and shot.
Witnesses also said several members of the community leader’s family, including his wife, mother, and three children, were taken from the scene and remain unaccounted for.
The attack, which caused widespread panic and prompted mass displacement, has raised urgent concerns about worsening security conditions in parts of rural Nigeria.
State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed the death toll and said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the deployment of an additional army battalion under a new initiative called Operation Savannah Shield to counter militant activity in the region.
Officials emphasized the need for increased security presence to restore community confidence and prevent further violence. Calls for intensified military action and cooperation with security forces have also been echoed by legislative leaders.
