Open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
LAW STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (LAWSAN)*
To,
The President, Federal Republic Of Nigeria,
The National Assembly,
The Ministry of Education,
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board,
*UTME 2024: THE NEED FOR A STATE OF EMERGENCY ON THE EDUCATION SECTOR
Without any modicum of doubt, education is the undeniable foundation for the development and progress of any society. It is the rock upon which the whole building of human development stands.
The recent results breakdown released by JAMB for the 2024 UTME speaks ill of our educational system. It goes a long way to show that our educational system is in distress and requires urgent assistance.
The results show that over seventy percent of registered candidates scored below average. This has been a recurring decimal and it is high time, relevant stakeholders put their hands on deck and put an end to this.
The leadership of the National body of law students in Nigeria, the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), led by Anyiam Christian Kelechukwu, wishes to use this opportunity to call on the federal government, through the Ministry of Education, to declare A STATE OF EMERGENCY on our educational system. It is going down the drain and such state of things spells doom for the future of our beloved country.
The President of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has shown by his previous antecedents that he is a lover of education. LAWSAN calls on him to declare a state of emergency on the education sector and to prevent further damage, under his watch. Doing otherwise will be tantamount to allowing the proverbial goat, eat palm fodders on the head of our beloved country.
There should be a total overhaul & cleansing of the education apparatus in the country.
I also call on the distinguished JAMB registrar, Prof Oloyede to promptly conduct mop up exams for those that missed their scheduled dates. Those that missed their scheduled dates but with credible reasons for such and are willing to sit for the exams, should be given the opportunity to throw their hats into the ring. The body may also consider scheduling a mop-up exam for those who failed instead of arbitrarily reducing the average cutoff lower than it currently is.
We cannot continue to undermine the importance of the education sector to our dear country. Its importance can be likened to the importance of water to the life of a fish. The Federal Government should wake up to the reality of the collapsing state of education in Nigeria and declare a STATE OF EMERGENCY on it.
Signed,
Anyiam Christian Kelechukwu,
National President, Law Students Association of Nigeria
