Mayor Israel Eshanekpe , popularly known as Akpodoro, has traversed a remarkable journey from his days as a militant leader in the Niger Delta to becoming a beacon of hope and positive change in his Gbaregolor community in Ughelli South local government area of Delta state.

Akpodoro, who renounced militancy in 2009 during the administration of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, is a man who holds the values of Niger Delta and that of his Urhobo in high esteem. An indigene of Gbaregolor in Ughelli South local government area of Delta state, Akpodoro has been in the forefront in the battle for the welfare of Niger Delta people and the people of Urhobo in Delta state.

Besides ensuring equity and justice in Delta state and the Niger Delta, he is also very much involved in issues of national unity, cohesion and integration. In most fora, he is seen supporting issues that call for peace in Nigeria and combat issues that tend tear the nation apart and cause chaos and acrimony. Akpodoro is one of the few Nigerians who are standing for the good of Nigeria and putting all their energy to ensure the nation works.

In the ongoing battle for pipeline surveillance contract, Akpodoro has consistently stood with the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in its quest to protect oil facilities in the volatile region. For him, whatever good plan the federal government stands for should be executed to the letter without considering views that are antithetical to national good and good governance. His belief is that those standing against popular views are enemies of the state and should be jettisoned at all cost.

As an ex-militant leader, Akpodoro has championed the cause of ex-militants who have surrendered in response to the call by the federal government during the administration of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2009. After surrendering to the federal government, Akpodoro has put his life on the line fighting for the welfare of the former Niger Delta warriors. His plans are to ensure that the former warlords are catered for.

For him, the welfare of the former militants should be given its due regard as promised by the federal government. The federal government, through the presidential amnesty program, has promised to run welfare programs for the former militants. Among the promises made by the government is payment of stipends to the repentant militants, training of repentant militants in different skills acquisition programmes and sponsoring others abroad for studies outside the shore of Nigeria.

Since turning away from militancy, Akpodoro has vigorously pursued programmes for the good of Urhobo people, Niger Delta region and the Nigeria nation at large. Here, we delve into the extensive list of good deeds and contributions that define Akpodoro’s legacy of service and compassion.
