As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, Chief Emma Ejiofor, PhD, the Onishe of Ubulu, has issued a strong call for ethical leadership, empathetic governance, and a collective shift from rhetoric to action in addressing the nation’s persistent challenges.
In a message commemorating the historic occasion, Chief Ejiofor cautioned against what he described as “statistical acrobatics that often masquerade as progress,” stressing that Nigeria must confront its realities with honesty and courage.
“The time for inventing numbers, for painting a glossy picture over a foundation of stark realities, has long passed,” he declared.
According to him, the country’s vast human and natural resources remain underutilized, not due to lack of potential, but largely because of what he termed “the dire lack of ethical leadership and empathetic governance.” He lamented the “insidious, unsustainable practices born of greed and avarice” that have stifled equitable growth, diverted resources, and eroded public trust.
Chief Ejiofor urged leaders at all levels to dismantle this cycle by prioritizing the collective good over personal gain. He emphasized that genuine national progress lies in tackling the fundamental needs of citizens – including security, education, healthcare, and infrastructure – rather than pursuing politically expedient or cosmetic projects.
“It is imperative that our leadership eschew personal enrichment for the collective good, replacing self-interest with profound empathy for the vast population they serve,” he said.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s enduring challenges, Chief Ejiofor expressed optimism about the country’s potential. He highlighted the nation’s rich cultural heritage, industrious spirit, and abundant resources as foundations for greatness – provided that leadership and citizens alike commit to genuine reforms and decisive action.
“The potential for greatness lies within us,” he said. “It is time for every Nigerian, especially those in positions of power, to be ‘up and doing’ – to engage actively, decisively, and with unwavering commitment to our shared future.”
He concluded with a hopeful vision for Nigeria’s rebirth: a country where prosperity is shared, justice prevails, and every citizen thrives regardless of background.
“May Nigeria truly rise to its full, magnificent stature. May it be a nation where prosperity is shared, where justice prevails, and where every citizen can thrive,” Chief Ejiofor prayed.
