It was a day of pride, honour, and cultural splendour in Oko Kingdom, an agrarian community in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, as prominent son of the soil, Olisa Ogochukwu, was formally bestowed with the revered traditional title of Ebubedike 1 of Oko Kingdom.

The historic ceremony, which drew a massive turnout of people from far and near, marked a significant milestone not only in the life of the new title holder but also in the annals of the Oko community.

The colourful event witnessed the presence of respected community chiefs, traditional rulers, elders, men, women, and youths who converged at the venue to celebrate what many described as a rare honour and a defining moment for the kingdom.

Cultural displays, traditional music, and vibrant attire added glamour to the occasion, as the community momentarily suspended daily economic and social activities to fully participate in the ceremony.

Olisa Ogochukwu, visibly elated and deeply moved by the recognition, expressed profound gratitude to the people of Oko Kingdom for finding him worthy of such an exalted title.
Speaking to journalists at the event, he described the conferment as both an elevation and a call to higher responsibility.
“This title is not just an honour; it is a recognition by the entire Oko community and the whole kingdom in Oshimili South,” he said.
“I am deeply humbled and grateful. To be bestowed with the title of Ebubedike 1 of Oko Kingdom is a rare privilege, and indeed, the first of its kind in this kingdom.”
He explained that Ebubedike, which symbolizes the pride, strength, and dignity of a young man, comes with enormous responsibility and expectation.
“Ebubedike is the pride of a young man. It is a signal for me to do more for my people. Traditional title holders are leaders within the community. People listen to us, trust us, and confide in us,” Chief Ogochukwu stated.
“We hear the agitations of the people and relay them to the government. Because we are traditional title holders, the government listens to us. This means we are holding a position of trust, and we cannot afford to fail our people.”
He further emphasized that with the conferment of the title, he has officially become a stakeholder in the affairs of the community, committed to promoting unity, development, and effective engagement between the people and government authorities.
Addressing developmental concerns during the interaction, the newly installed Ebubedike 1 commended the Delta State Government for its efforts in improving the welfare of the people, while making a passionate appeal for infrastructural development, particularly road construction.
“Our governor has done a lot for the people, and we appreciate him sincerely,” he noted. “However, we are appealing that he should use his good office to complete what he has already started. If you are coming from Asaba to this place, it should not take more than 15 minutes with good roads.”
Acknowledging the challenging terrain of the area, Ogochukwu maintained that the project is achievable and would significantly enhance connectivity and economic activities.
“We know the road passes through a difficult terrain, but it is doable. We are appealing that the road should be completed. After my village, the next village is Ndokwa East. Completing this road will open up our communities and improve the lives of our people.”
The ceremony ended on a high note, with goodwill messages, prayers, and celebrations continuing late into the day.
For many residents, the conferment of the Ebubedike title on Olisa Ogochukwu represents renewed hope, responsible leadership, and a stronger voice for Oko Kingdom in the pursuit of sustainable development and good governance.
