Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has reacted to the emergence of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala as director general of World Trade Organisation (WTO). Okonjo Iweala is from Ogwashi Uku in Aniocha South local government area of Delta state
Her emergence makes her the first black to hold the office since the creation of the organization in the last 25 years. The body is saddled with the responsibility of regulating trade among member nations across the world.
Eight countries presented candidates for the contest, even Egypt in Central Africa. But as the battle progressed, many countries’ representatives fell out, giving way to only Nigeria’s Okonjo Iweala and South Korea’s candidate.
She was also rejected by former president of the United States, Donald Trump but the lost of Donald Trump paved way for Joe Biden accepting her candidacy. Coupled with the withdrawal of Korea’s candidate, Iweala was left to be the sole candidate for the job.
She was finally accepted by the body on Monday, February 15, 2021.
In a congratulatory message, Governor Okowa said the people of Delta state and Nigeria are with her as she takes over the leadership of the foremost world trade organization.
