Dame Edith Okowa, wife of Delta state governor, has said that perpetrators of violence against women will end up spending their life time in jail.
Mrs. Okowa, who felt pained following reports of violence against women and the girl-child, warned culprits to desist from such acts as the end may not be palatable for them.
The governor’s wife who spoke during the 2021 16 Days Activism Against Gender Based Violence held in Asaba, said violence against women is under reported due to fear and shame.
According to her, women are at disadvantage, hence they are easily taken for preys, abused and maltreated by the menfolk.
She said women go through different forms of abuse, rape, domestic violence, human trafficking, noting that the myth that women are not heard but only seen has sent many to early grave.
She said most parents whose daughters are raped are silent due to ignorance, poverty while some are paid to keep quiet.
She called on all women to work and give voice to the voiceless women, just as she said she sympathised with victims of violent abuse.
The governor’s wife who frowned at the way a Divisional Police Officer in Warri treated the report of a victim of rape, told the participants that the case would be reported to the commissioner of police for necssary action.
The report was that of a 13-year-old girl, Sharon who was kidnapped from Warri and taken across Nigerian border to Accra Ghana for sexual molestation.
But when an activist reported the matter to the DPO in Warri, he reportedly played down on the matter, asking the activist what was his interest in the matter.
The governor’s wife who felt pained ssid the DPO must come out to tell why he gave such response to the request of the NGO director.
