Fresh details have emerged about the passing of Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide to Goodluck Jonathan.

Okupe was reported dead Friday morning at the age of 72.

Family sources have confirmed that Okupe had been in Abuja but returned to Lagos less than a week before his death for a surgical procedure at a hospital on Lagos Island. Unfortunately, he did not survive the operation.

“He was in Abuja and returned to Lagos a few days ago, in fact, less than a week ago. He went for a surgery at a hospital on the Lagos Island but he didn’t survive the surgery,” a family source revealed.

Okupe had been battling multiple health issues for over 40 years. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago and later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder.

“He had been on medication for more than 40 years, taking different drugs religiously for various types of ailments including prostate cancer. He was also dealing with weight issues,” a family source said.

It is also understood that he travelled to Israel in October 2023 for treatment after being hospitalized, but his condition did not improve as expected.

Okupe was the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign. However, he resigned from the position after being convicted of money laundering. Following the election, he left the Labour Party and later supported President Bola Tinubu’s administration
