As the cases of rape on the girl child increase in Nigeria, a renowned counsellor, Mrs. Rose Obi has counselled the girl child, parents and government on how to check the ugly trend.
Obi who is the chairman of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) Uvwie Local Government Area Chapter, gave the advice in a media interaction with our correspondent at Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government Area.
She counselled the girl child and indeed ladies not to keep late night, be at alert, walk in groups and keep spray can in their bags or purses at all times.
Obi who is also the proprietress of City Child Foundation Schools, Ekpan identified the reasons behind delayed or late disclosure of rape cases by female victims to include: threat to life, disbelief from others, shame and embarrassment, backlash from the public amongst others.
The renowned educationist advised parents to “sit your children down both genders, nurture them in the way of the Lord, to mind the company they keep, have counselling with them and let them air their views ,correct them and lead them, right if they have been going astray. This quarantine period should be a bonding time with you and your kids”
Mrs. Obi also admonished boys or men not to force themselves on ladies” forcing yourself on ladies doesn’t make you a man or show how manly you can be; it shows cowardice and weakness because you were unable to accept no.”
While applauding the media for their enlightenment campaign against the ugly trend, she urged lawmakers at all levels of government to enact laws that would punish rapists in the country.
