Rise in price of foods: Check what Nigerian women must do to remain healthy, economically balanced

With the current hike in the prices of staple foods, it behoves on every woman to develop skills in home management especially in the preparation of food for the consumption of the family. Unfortunately, in a bid to manage resources, it is important that every woman overcomes the temptation of throwing caution to the wind by neglecting simple health injunctions.

The temptation to prepare food for posterity has become a trap for most women. This is because it is believed by some women that the same energy whether gas, stove or fire wood required to prepare a small quantity of food will also be harnessed to prepare a larger quantity. This is why some women deliberately feed their family with stale food.

It is important that we have a recap on the fact that our health is dependent on what we consume. Nutritionists have advised that it is important to eat food fresh. This, according to them, will ensure that we get all the necessary ingredients we need for the proper functioning of our body.

The most worrisome is when a woman in a bid to manage resources, go to the market to deliberately purchase stale products at a cheaper rate. The truth is that the economy is not an excuse to risk the health of your family members in order to save cost. This may result to a situation where such woman will end up spending more when the chips are down.

It is a truism that we eat for the overall health of our body. This is why it is important that given the right income, women will have to adjust and plan and maneuver their busy schedule to master the culinary art of cooking according to the immediate needs of the family. It is highly unacceptable to exhibit a high level of mismanagement of resources by cooking more than the family can consume.

Although food can be preserved in refrigerator if there is constant power supply as is common among career women, it is important that time is created to feed the family with fresh food to make up for the discrepancy in the level of nutrition lost as result of refrigerating food especially for a long period of time. If otherwise, the chances that eating of food pre-heated on a daily basis until the food is exhausted will become a common occurrence.

While there seems to be no avoiding eating stale food by an average Nigerian, efforts should be made by women to ensure that foods such as  vegetables, tubers, grains, etc are prepared for immediate consumption. While some people may argue that they are too busy to prepare fresh food every day, it is important that a bell of reminder to the fact that the optimum health of the family will be put at risk continues to ring in our mind. Or do you think   the time to stay on admission in the hospital or fight with avoidable health issues will not be created? So, why take the risk.

At a time when the number of infectious diseases is growing everyday and with emphasis on survival placed on a strong immune system that is guaranteed by the consumption of healthy diet, the importance of ensuring that the family eat fresh balanced diet cannot be over emphasized. We all need to discard sentiments, look beyond the present harsh economy and eat fresh balanced diet. When there is a will there is a way.
