Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service near Agbor, Delta State, which occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the senator extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident and sympathised with passengers who sustained injuries.

According to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), three persons lost their lives in the crash, while all passengers aboard the train have been accounted for.

Senator Dafinone described the loss as devastating, stressing that “every life lost is one too many.”

“At this difficult time, our thoughts are with the bereaved families, the injured receiving treatment, and the survivors who may continue to grapple with the emotional impact of the tragedy,” he said.

The lawmaker also commended the swift intervention of the Delta State Government, emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies, railway officials, and volunteers whose prompt actions helped rescue passengers and provide critical assistance at the scene.

Senator Dafinone noted that the incident underscores the urgent need to prioritise safety within Nigeria’s public transportation system, particularly on the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor, which he described as a vital national asset supporting economic activities across several states.

“The continued success of the rail corridor depends on both operational efficiency and public confidence in its safety,” he stated.

He called for an immediate, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident, urging authorities to identify any technical or operational failures and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.

“The affected families deserve answers, and the public deserves reassurance that every lesson from this tragedy will be acted upon,” the senator added.

Dafinone further urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Nigerian Railway Corporation, and relevant safety agencies to carry out a thorough review of operational and safety protocols across the national rail network.

He emphasised the importance of regular maintenance, strict compliance with safety standards, and stronger emergency preparedness measures to safeguard passengers.

The senator also appealed for adequate medical care, counselling, and support services for injured passengers and affected families to aid their recovery.

He concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and strength for everyone affected by the tragedy.

“May God grant comfort to their families, healing to the injured, and strength to all those affected by this tragedy,” he said.
