Don Bosco Science Academy, Ekpoma, Edo state has won the 12th edition of the SEPLAT JV PEARLS quiz competition, bagging the grand prize of N1Om cash award.
Seplat Petroleum Development Company, an indigenous oil and gas producer in the Niger Delta region, through one of its Corporate Social Responsibility projects, Preparing Exceptional and Responsible Leaders (PEARLs), achieved yet another milestone with this year’s competition.
The annual competition which usually involves schools from Edo and Delta states competing for various laurels and prizes, however commenced this year online.
At the online stage, 510 schools took the test but only 139 were qualified, before its physical climax on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the Southend Event Center, Asaba, the Delta state capital.
Welcoming dignitaries and participating schools to the event, the Director, External Affairs and sustainability for Seplat FAG PLC, Chioma Afeh said that Seplat is committed to being the best practice operator, a responsible and accountable corporate organization.
Afeh stated that Seplat JV Pearls Quiz is aimed at rewarding academic excellence in both Delta and Edo states by engendering the spirit of competition into students.
She added that, Seplat has implemented programs such as health care, education, capacity building, youth empowerment and Infrastructural development in their host states.
Also speaking, the Managing Director Seplat West, Ayodele Olatunde, appreciated the cooperation of the governor of Edo and Delta states and the education commissioners of both states.
Olatunde said that Seplat Pearls Quiz is designed to promote and reward academic excellence in secondary schools both in Delta and Edo states, adding that the results gotten over the years have shown that the oil firm would continue encouraging the students.
At the end of the quiz competition which started off with 510 schools, four schools emerged at the grand finale which saw Don Bosco Science Academy, Ekpoma, Edo state emerging as the winner after defeating Our Saviour Secondary School, Sapele. The third position goes to Hollywood International School, Asaba after defeating Divine Province Educational Center, Edo state.
The champion of the quiz competition, Don Bosco Academy went home with ten million naira as grand prize while their students got one hundred thousand naira each. Our Savior School, the first runner up got five million naira while their students got Seventy five thousand naira each.
Hollywood international School, the second runner up got three million Naira while their students went home with fifty thousand naira each, just as Division Province Education students were offered Ten thousand Naira each.
Various educational materials were also given to the participating students and each of the school teachers present were given HP laptop computers.
Dignitaries who graced the programme included the Secretary to Delta State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, the speaker Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, CSM Manager of Seplat Energy, Esther Isha; representatives of the Ministries of Education, Science and Technology of Edo and Delta States and Seplat top officials.
