The caretaker committee of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, on Thursday participated in the quarterly consultative meeting convened by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties.
Representing the PDP at the gathering were Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, Acting National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and National Organising Secretary Umar Bature. Observers noted that the delegation occupied seats labelled for the recognised leadership of the party.
The attendance comes against the backdrop of a deepening leadership crisis within the PDP, where rival factions have laid claim to the party’s national leadership.
A Federal High Court in Ibadan recently nullified the party’s November 2025 convention that produced a different leadership team, and ordered some party figures to cease presenting themselves as national officers, a ruling that has fuelled competing claims of legitimacy.
While the Wike-aligned caretaker committee says it is the legitimately recognised leadership and plans a fresh convention, other party figures who emerged from the Ibadan convention have rejected the ruling and are pursuing legal avenues to challenge it.
The dispute has drawn ongoing attention from Nigeria’s electoral body and courts, as the party seeks stability ahead of key elections.
