A hunter identified as Ismaila Ojo has been arrested after he shot dead 70-year-old neighbour at Ita-Merin village, near Ore in Ondo State.
According to reports, the victim was killed while he was defecating in the bush at the back of the house.
While being paraded before the newsmen in Akure, Ojo, who claimed to be a registered hunter, confessed that he shot the aged man around 3am.
However, he insisted that he mistakenly took the victim for an animal in the night.
According to him, he was the one that raised the alarm after he mistakenly shot the aged man.
Ojo added that he later took the victim to the near farm settlement for medical attention but sadly, he died days after the incident.
Going further, the suspect noted that if he did shot him deliberately, he would not have raised the alarm for help.
He went on to plead for mercy, saying he could not have killed his neighbour for nothing.
“I have never committed a crime in my life; everybody knows me as a hunter; I don’t know how animals turned to human being. Have mercy on me,” he said.
