Some ladies wear trousers but do not know why, read reasons 4 ladies gave to Emerald News inquiries on why women wear trousers

By-Oke Orhonigbe

In our contemporary society, a woman who does not wear trousers almost seems to be out of fashion as it has been in vogue from time immemorial. Designers have, overtime, built several kinds of trousers for ladies ranging from cooperate, jeans,  palazzo among others.

Elizabeth Smith Miller is often credited as the first modern woman to wear female trousers. Miller was a suffragette. Her goal in the 1800s was to help women in the United States win the right to vote.

But over the years, pants or trousers have become a normal dress for women and young ladies. Many do not even know why they wear trousers. As they grow up, they find themselves joining the trend and the system continues from one generation to another.

Emerald News went to town and spoke to a number of ladies as to why the wearing of trousers happens to be most predominant among female gender when the apparel was designed originally for men. There are ladies who do not have skirts in their wardrobe. All they have as wears is trousers.

Ugah Juliet, an event planner, said  that pants are worn to clad one’s body. She said: “I wear trousers because it covers my body. Pants are regular apparels.

“Some persons might not like it but for me personally, I just love it and it makes me very comfortable when walking around and most especially when I have an event to decorate. I can’t wear skirts and climb to decorate a hall comfortably.”

Another lady, Temitope Simon,  a designer, expressed her delight at wearing pants. “Pants make me look extremely smart and comfortable compared to other clothings and I grew up wearing it. So I can literally say I’m more to it than skirt.’

Izah Dorcas revealed that pants make her walking steps and sitting positions more balanced. “I walk slowly and cautiously when I’m in skirts or gowns but in trousers I walk faster.

“I don’t want to say I sit carelessly when I’m in pants but I’m extremely careful about my sitting position when I’m in skirts but in pants, hmm I’m safer”, the undergraduate explained.

Sarah Daniels, a female basketballer in Warri, said she can’t imagine what the world would be without female putting on pants, especially in the sports world.

“I can’t imagine wearing skirts all my life to play basketball or even hang out with friends. Without pants, a lot of sports would have been not so great, especially my kind of sports where you have to jump alot.

“Pants make you feel great and relaxed, everything covered nothing to feel insecure about, especially when I’m running up the rim to give a slam dunk.

I won’t be able to do that properly with skirts.

“So for me, I wear pants because it makes me feel more secured and less cautious of my body movement.”
