The 2023 elections: A choice that could consume Nigeria

The 2023 Election

Early hours of Thursday, I read an article by Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, and I would like to share some of his opinions on the 2023 elections with you.

In his mind, the 2023 elections are very important to the future of Nigeria, with regards to the options we’ll have to make.

He fears that if Nigeria makes the wrong choice, then they will consume themselves before 2023.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is telling Nigerians ahead of the 2023 general elections to be deliberate and make wise choices for their country.

On Wednesday, at the Wilson Badejo Foundation’s 15th annual lecture, the ex-President made a call. He said Nigeria cannot afford to choose bad people to run the country at this time with so many challenges on the horizon.

He lamented the nation’s present state, calling for more prayers as Africa’s most populous nation heads to the polls in February of next year 2023.

Earlier he said that Nigeria has been held back because of poverty and insecurity. He noted that
Nigeria is not what it could be today. If anybody says anything to the contrary, then they’re in denial, the former President said. ”No one will do it for us and no one needs to be blamed.

But the choice is in our hands. You don’t have anybody to blame. Ultimately, it’s up to us whether we make the right choice or not. If we don’t make the right choice, we blame only ourselves.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set the presidential and National Assembly elections to take place on the 25th of February 2023 and the governorship and state assembly polls to take place on the 11th of March 2023.

The second presidential term of President Muhammadu Buhari is set to expire on May 29, 2023. He is expected to hand over power to a democratically elected successor without issue.

The race for the presidential election is coming together gradually with key candidates emerging from the major political parties.

There are, for example, Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and his counterpart in the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Many of the contenders for the seat are ex-governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPC), and the rest.

The 2023 elections are fast approaching, and with them, a choice could potentially consume Nigeria.

The wrong choice could lead to years of instability and conflict, while the right choice could help Nigeria finally achieve its potential, just as it did under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration in 1999.

In order for Nigeria to make the right choice in 2023, we must act now and reject this opportunity to return to our country’s past failures. The choice is our hands.
