President Bola Tinubu has assented to a fresh amendment to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria unifying the retirement age of judicial officers in the country.
With the signing of the Constitutional Amendment Bill, the retirement age and pension rights of judicial officers have been effectively brought into uniformity and other related matters.
With this development, High Court and Court of Appeal judges who retire at age 65 will now retire at age 70 like the justices of the nation’s Supreme Court.
The signing of the bill into law, which was the first bill to be signed by the president since his inauguration on May 29, 2023, took place on Thursday at the State House, Abuja.
President Tinubu, according to a release issued by the Director of Information at the State House, Mr Abiodun Oladunjoye, signed the bill into law as part of the powers vested in him under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The president signed into law the ‘Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) (No.37), 2023’ presented by the outgoing 9th National Assembly.
Speaking while signing the amendment bill into law, President Tinubu pledged his administration’s dedication to strengthening the judiciary, ensuring the rule of law and empowering judicial officers to execute their responsibilities effectively.
