A group, De-Adorable Women and Children Initiative, has put smiles on the faces of primary and secondary school students in Asaba, the Delta state capital.
Specifically, the group donated school uniforms and books to the students of Abuato Primary School 3 and Zappa Mixed Secondary School in the heart of the state capital.
President of the group, Mrs. Anita Uche Chuks who presented the uniforms and books alongside the group’s secretary, Pat Gbemudu and other members, told Emerald News that the gesture was the group’s way of reaching out to the poor and less privileged in the society.
She said it is one of the group’s desire to help the students achieve their goals and become better in society. She told our reporter that the group’s desire is to see all children in society achieve their goals and become great in Nigeria.
According to her, some of the students whose uniforms were torn and rumpled may be having inferiority complex among their peers, a development which could make them not to socialise well and get the best from their schools.
She said: “We are reaching out to the poor to motivate them to bring out the potentials in them. They should look beyond this level believing God for a better and glorious future.”
Pat Gbemudu, secretary of the group and chairman of National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Asaba, said emphasis should be placed on the welfare of the girl-child in society.
She told Emerald News that the girl-child should not be abandoned in the welfare package of good spirited institutions and humanitarian groups. She believes that the girl-child feels higher sense of shame and inferiority complex if not well clothed and covered.
Principal of Zappa Mixed Secondary School, Mrs. Nkechi Onyia, was very excited to see the group coming to present the uniforms and books to the students in her school.
The principal who said she has been in the school for almost two years, said it was heart warming for the group to select her school out of all the schools in the state capital.
She said the gesture would make them feel happy and look like their mates and would help them overcome inferiority complex.
“I’m happy with what I’m seeing. To choose my school out of all the schools in the town is a good development. I really appreciate you. God will bless you for remembering the poor and less privileged children,” the principal said.
Also, head teacher of Abuato Primary School 3, Mrs. Anita Arinze, was also very excited seeing the uniforms and books presented to the pupils of her school.
“I’m highly overwhelmed by this show of love to my pupils by this group. This is a big recognition of the less privileged in the society. It is not really easy but I want to say that you have done well. God will bless you and your home,” the headteacher said.
She appreciated the members of De-Adorable Women and Children Initiative for finding her school worthy of such humanitarian gesture.
Two of the students expressed appreciation on behalf of others. Wisdom Moses, a JSS 11 student, said he felt great and happy haven changed his uniform to a new one.
He said his mother would be very happy to see him in a brand new uniform after his torn and rumpled uniform was dropped for a new one.
Miracle Josaibuni, also in JSS11, was happy to have dropped her old and worn out uniform for a new one by the group.
“My uniform before now was torn and rumpled. I was feeling bad and ashamed in the presence of my friends but now I am happy. God will bless this group. My mummy will be very happy when she sees me at home.”
The children were happy with an expression of joy and happiness written on their faces having received the uniforms.
The group is still visiting other rural communities to give out more uniforms, books, bags and sandals to rural school children.
