Delta state commissioner for environment, Chief Godspower Omafuvwe Asiuwhu has called on the people and residents of Delta state to avoid indiscriminate bush burning and uphold good sanitary habits.
Chief Asiuvwhu made the call during a press conference with journalists in Asaba on Thursday, December 8, 2022.
He said Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is desirous of sustainable environment for Deltans and all residents in the state, hence he frowns against all acts of indiscriminate bush burning in the state.
He said some individuals are involved in the act of setting bushes on fire which results in wild fire due to the dry and breezy environment.
He said such action is not only unlawful but destructive as indescriminate bush burning has led to loss of lives and destruction of properties, farm produce and most sadly economic crops.
He describef good sanitation as a fundamental building block in the prevention of disease outbreak, hence he said people should learn to own their environment by keeping it clean at all times.
This, according to him, will make them enjoy good health at all times. He said with this Delta state will be able to achieve the sustainable development goals which will translate to sustainable national development.
He said as part of efforts to promote clean, healthy and sustainable environment, the ministry has embarked on disaster reduction measures such as vegetation control, fumigation, desiltation of drains, oprning of natural waterways and continuous sensitisation awareness campaign on environmental sanitation practices.
He encouraged all Deltans to embark on the act of tree planting within their neighbourhood to give easthetic to their environment, at the same time serve as windbreakers, agents of erosion of erosion prevention and help reduce effects of greenhouse gases.
