Abia Traditional Rulers Rally Behind Nigeria’s Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu for Third Term, Reject Zoning Debate

Traditional rulers from Bende Federal Constituency in Nigeria’s Abia State have unanimously endorsed Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for a third term in office, declaring that his performance has earned him another opportunity to represent the constituency.

The endorsement came during a meeting between Kalu and members of the Traditional Rulers Council of Bende South State Constituency (Ikwuisi), led by the council’s chairman, Eze Uchendu Okorie. The monarchs praised the Deputy Speaker for what they described as exceptional legislative achievements and development projects that have positively impacted communities across the constituency.

The royal fathers also dismissed reports suggesting that the Bende Federal Constituency seat is subject to a zoning agreement. They insisted that no such arrangement exists and argued that the people should continue to support a representative based on performance rather than political claims.

Speaking on behalf of the council, Eze Uchendu Okorie said Kalu’s achievements have brought pride to the people of Bende and demonstrated effective leadership at the national level. He noted that the traditional rulers were united in their decision to encourage the Deputy Speaker to seek re-election in the 2027 general elections.

Several monarchs who addressed the gathering highlighted Kalu’s record in attracting infrastructure projects, strengthening oversight responsibilities, expanding healthcare and education initiatives, and facilitating greater federal government presence in the constituency.

Eze P.C. Onyegbu rejected claims that zoning should determine who represents Bende in the House of Representatives. According to him, Kalu has outperformed previous representatives through quality representation, strategic networking, and sustained development efforts. He added that Kalu’s position as Deputy Speaker has increased the visibility and influence of both Abia State and Nigeria’s South-East region.

Another traditional ruler, Eze Patrick Udeh, described Kalu as a leader who has continued to promote the interests of Bende and the wider Igbo community. He challenged anyone seeking to contest the seat to first demonstrate a comparable record of service and development.

Responding to the endorsement, Benjamin Kalu thanked the traditional rulers for their confidence and support. He attributed his accomplishments to the cooperation, prayers, and trust of the people of Bende.
The Deputy Speaker outlined several projects executed during his tenure, including improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, youth empowerment, and women’s development. He pledged to continue attracting more federal projects and delivering quality representation if re-elected.

Kalu said he remains committed to ensuring that Bende benefits from effective leadership and sustainable development, expressing confidence that greater achievements lie ahead if given another mandate by the people.
