A former local government chairman in northern Nigeria has returned to his tailoring business after losing his position through a court ruling, saying skilled work provides greater security than political office.
Abdullahi Gali Shitu, widely known as Comrade Abdullahi Gali Basaf, previously served as chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area in Kano State until March 2026. Following a court decision that removed him from office, Basaf chose to focus once again on the tailoring profession he had practiced long before entering politics.
According to the former chairman, his decision is meant to encourage politicians and young people to develop sustainable skills rather than depend entirely on public office for their livelihood. He said politics should be viewed as an opportunity to serve society, while vocational skills provide long-term financial stability.
Basaf explained that tailoring had supported him financially throughout his political career, helping him fund campaigns and other activities. He currently operates a tailoring workshop in Sheka Ward, where about 20 people are employed.
Looking ahead, he plans to transform the business into a modern garment manufacturing company capable of creating more than 50 jobs. He said the expansion would contribute to economic growth while providing employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
Despite holding both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science, Basaf said he followed his passion for tailoring instead of pursuing only white-collar employment. He believes vocational professions deserve greater respect and recognition across Africa.
The former chairman urged young Africans not to look down on skilled trades, stressing that practical professions can provide steady income and independence even when political fortunes change.
Basaf’s political journey included involvement with the Kwankwasiyya movement. He founded Kwankwasiyya Reporters in 2015, served as chairman of the Alliance National Party in Kano, contested for a Senate seat in 2019, and later joined the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), where he worked as Senior Special Assistant on Information.
He was elected chairman of Kumbotso Local Government in 2024 before a Kano State High Court nullified his Certificate of Return in March 2026 and declared another candidate, Ali Musa, the rightful winner.
Reflecting on his experience, Basaf described tailoring as a profession that continues to provide income regardless of political changes. While he intends to remain active in public affairs, he said his business will remain the foundation of his livelihood and a platform for creating jobs and empowering others.
