REA DETAILS AS WRITTEN BY FAVOUR OHIOLE

Ahead of March 6, 2021 local government election in Delta state, no fewer than four mobile police were killed in Ughelli the administrative headquarters of Ughelli north local government as tragedy struck on Sunday.

The incident happened during church service as men of underworld shot dead a mobile police attached to a Very Important Person (VIP) while on guard along Oviri-Ogor road, Ughelli. His rifle was said to have been carted away by the unidentified hoodlums.

An eyewitness account said that the gunmen came in numbers and opened fire on the police who escorted his late boss’ wife to a church service in one of new generation churches along Oviri –Ogor road on Sunday February 14, 2021.

Emerald News can report that barely a month ago, three mobile police officers attached to a popular eatery and event centre in Ughelli were gruesomely killed at their duty post. Ughelli has been a hotspot of crisis and criminal activities in Delta.

Not long ago, there were rival cult killings that led to burning of houses and destroying properties in millions of Naira. Police have also been receiving the brunt from the youths of the community.

Wife of the traditional ruler also escaped being kidnapped by hoodlums in the community. No life was, however, lost in that incident. Youths in that community have been daring police officers as that community was where the fake news came from that led to the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria.

Speaking to our correspondent, a member of the church who did not want his name mentioned, said the church was confused following the killing of the mobile police officer who escorted a member of the church who lost her husband few months ago to the cold hand of death.

Rainbow Newspaper investigation revealed that the slain police officer whose name was given as Insp. Ninyel Nwangwang served at PMF 31 Ogwashi Uku  but he was on escort duty until he meant his untimely death.

When contacted, a senior police officer in ‘A’ Division, Ughelli, confirmed the killing but said he is not aware of his movement, he lamented bitterly on unprofessional attitude of some police officers who indulged in illegal duty.

He said: “A Nigeria police officer who is on duty must report to his boss about his movement either within or not his area of jurisdiction. We got a call that a mobile policeman was shot dead in one of the Pentecostal churches, Victorious Faith Fire Assembly along Oviri-Ogor road, Ughelli”

Reacting to the killing, the Commandant of Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Comrade Monday Ohwesiri, said the killing of police officer and carting way of their service guns in the council area is a sign of warning and a call to all security operatives to wake up to their responsibilities.

When contacted, the Delta state police image maker, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident to our reporter, adding that the police are investigating the circumstance that led to his gruesome murder just as she said that the police are on the trail of the assassinator to recover the missing rifle and bring the penetrator to book.

As at the time of filing this report, the remains of the slain mobile police officer has been deposited at Ughelli Central Hospital morgue while investigation is ongoing.
