President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally forwarded the name of former Kebbi State Governor Usman Saidu Dakingari to Nigeria’s Senate for confirmation as a career ambassador, signifying a renewed bid to place him in the nation’s foreign service.
The nomination comes just weeks after an earlier attempt to appoint Dakingari as an ambassador-designate initially linked to a posting in Turkey was withdrawn amid confusion over ambassadorial assignments.
In a letter read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu cited constitutional provisions underpinning his request and urged lawmakers to expedite the review and confirmation process.
The nomination has been referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening, with a report expected within the coming week.
The move is part of a broader effort by the Nigerian government to fill key diplomatic positions, which have seen slow progress since the previous ambassadorial list was confirmed late last year.
