Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai on Monday voluntarily presented himself at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria’s capital to comply with an invitation linked to an ongoing corruption investigation.
The EFCC first issued the summons in December 2025 as part of a broader inquiry into alleged financial irregularities during El-Rufai’s tenure, which reportedly involve approximately ₦432 billion.
El-Rufai’s legal team had earlier informed the EFCC that he was abroad when the initial invitation arrived and would attend upon his return a promise he fulfilled on Monday morning.
Public Reactions and Security Tensions
Pro- and anti-El-Rufai demonstrators gathered outside the anti-graft agency’s Abuja offices, creating a tense environment as the former governor entered the building.
Security personnel reportedly limited access to members of his entourage amid the standoff.
Supporters called for respect for due process, while critics urged investigators to pursue a transparent and unbiased review of the allegations against him.
The visit follows a widely reported incident earlier this month in which security officials allegedly attempted to detain El-Rufai at Abuja’s international airport upon his arrival from abroad an action his team described as an improper arrest attempt.
EFCC summons, El-Rufai is expected to appear before the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as part of related investigations.
The former governor has consistently denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the probes as politically motivated.
