History was made in Asaba on Tuesday as the Executive Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area, Hon. (High Chief) Obi Kelvin Ezenyili (PhD), commissioned the newly reconstructed Ultra-Modern Ogbeogonogo Shopping Complex.
The grand commissioning ceremony attracted dignitaries including the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Obi (Prof.) Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge SAN, palace chiefs, titled chiefs, members of the Oshimili South Legislative House, and representatives of community groups.
In his address, Dr. Ezenyili reflected on the market’s history, noting that Ogbeogonogo had “stood the test of time but was twice destroyed by fire,” devastating traders and pushing many into street trading. While earlier efforts had provided a new structure, he explained that the scale of displacement demanded a larger, more modern facility.
“Our policy is centred on infrastructural development,” he said. “This shopping complex is a product of that vision, designed to reflect the cosmopolitan status of modern cities.”
The project was executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the council and DADA Global Resources, a construction firm led by Asaba-born businessman Ogbueshi Dada Okonji. Commending the company for delivering quality work on schedule, Dr. Ezenyili assured residents of his administration’s commitment to the MORE Agenda of Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and to fulfilling campaign promises.
Cutting the ribbon, the Asagba of Asaba hailed the project as a milestone in the city’s transformation. He emphasized that the shopping complex aligns with his broader vision of branding Asaba as a modern urban hub. The monarch further urged the council to consider establishing an Asaba International Market to ease pressure on Ogbeogonogo and appealed for indigenes to be prioritized in shop allocations.
In his remarks, Ogbueshi Okonji thanked the council for entrusting his company with the project, describing the new complex as “one of the remarkable developments under the reign of the Asagba.” He pledged continuous support for community growth.
The Ultra-Modern Ogbeogonogo Shopping Complex promises a safe, spacious, and organized space for hundreds of traders and shoppers. For residents, it marks not only the rebirth of a historic market but also a significant boost to Asaba’s economy and commercial activities.
