BREAKING: US Congressman Declares Nigeria ‘Deadliest Place for Christians,’ Demands Nnamdi Kanu’s Immediate Release

Rep. John James takes to House floor, links IPOB leader’s life sentence to ‘religious genocide’ and threatens US aid freeze

In a dramatic floor speech that could strain US-Nigeria relations, Michigan Congressman John James has reignited the battle over Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom—painting the detained IPOB leader as a victim of a “show trial” while accusing the Nigerian government of enabling a Christian massacre.

“Tens of thousands of Christians slaughtered since 2019,” James thundered, describing Boko Haram’s rampage as a “sustained pattern” that Abuja has “ignored or enabled.”

His weapon? H.Res. 1321—a resolution demanding Kanu either gets a fresh constitutionally-compliant trial or walks free unconditionally.

James didn’t stop at words. He dropped a financial bomb:

“America gives billions to Nigeria. We will not continue to fund a Christian genocide.”

The Kanu Case: Show Trial or Justice?

Kanu, 58, was handed a life sentence on November 20, 2025, by Justice James Omotosho in Abuja on terrorism charges. He’s been held at Kuje Correctional Centre since his controversial 2021 arrest in Nairobi, Kenya.

But James cited a July 2022 UN Working Group opinion that slammed Kanu’s detention as arbitrary and a violation of international human rights calling for his immediate release.

“Better yet, release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally,” James demanded.

What’s Next?

The resolution is now before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. If it gains traction, it could:

· Trigger diplomatic tensions between Washington and Abuja
· Put Nigeria’s $1B+ annual US aid under scrutiny
· Galvanize Biafran separatist movements globally

Nigeria’s reaction? Deafening silence—for now.
