US Congressman Threatens Nigeria: Free Nnamdi Kanu or Lose Billions in Aid

“We will not continue to fund a Christian genocide” – Rep. John James issues explosive ultimatum to Abuja

In a fiery floor speech that has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles, Michigan Congressman John James has thrown down the gauntlet: release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu immediately or face devastating US aid cuts.

The Republican lawmaker didn’t mince words during Thursday’s plenary session, labeling Kanu’s life sentence a “farce show trial” and demanding either a fresh constitutionally-compliant prosecution or unconditional freedom for the detained separatist leader.

The bombshell resolution (H.Res. 1321) now before the House Foreign Affairs Committee doesn’t stop there. James has linked Kanu’s detention to what he calls a “sustained pattern” of Christian persecution in Nigeria, claiming tens of thousands of believers have been slaughtered since 2019 with government complicity.

“America gives billions to Nigeria. We will not continue to fund a Christian genocide,” James declared, putting the Biden administration’s $1 billion+ annual aid package squarely in the crosshairs.

The reaction from IPOB headquarters was swift and celebratory, with spokesperson Emma Powerful hailing the intervention as “courageous” and a “significant development” in their international campaign.

But the real question remains: Will Abuja blink?

Kanu, the charismatic face of the Biafran independence movement, was convicted on terrorism charges in November 2025 and is currently serving life at Sokoto prison while his appeal winds through the courts.

With Nigeria already grappling with economic headwinds and security challenges, the prospect of losing America’s financial lifeline could force a high-stakes reckoning in the presidency.
