IT’S OFFICIAL: Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister
Andy Burnham is officially the United Kingdom’s new prime minister, taking over after Keir Starmer formally stepped down on Monday.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that Burnham met with King Charles, who asked him to form a new government.
In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham struck a humble but determined tone:
“I hear you. We have not been good enough, and we need to be better. We will be.”
He pledged to restore stability and promised a “new political model,” calling his premiership a “circuit-breaker for Britain.”
Burnham also announced a 10-year national plan to be unveiled later this year, with immediate action on the cost of living to give people “breathing space.”
“The care of people will be at the heart of everything I do,” he said. “I will give this my all.”
Now, all eyes turn to his cabinet picks though it’s unclear if any of the outgoing team will stay on.
Earlier, Starmer said he was leaving “with good grace and a smile.”
Burnham becomes the UK’s fourth prime minister in just five years.
