Chai!! Out of 36 states, FCT, this is the only state with highest number of abortions in Nigeria (it may be your state)

By Gladys Ekwu

Recent records have revealed that Anambra State in the South East has the highest rate of abortions in Nigeria. And this is authoritative.

The Coordinator of Family Planning in Anambra State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Chioma Okedo, said this during a Media Roundtable on Family Planning in Awka, the capital city of the state.

Mrs. Okedo also said that the youths between the age bracket of 18 -21 often resort to abortion of their unplanned babies.

She noted that the reason was that, there was no proper awareness and sensitization of family planning in the state.

The State Coordinator added that Anambra State has 1.3m women of reproductive age and records a maternal mortality rate of 286 per 100, 000 live births.

She said that this implies that 3,718 women of reproductive age die annually from child birth

The State Coordinator added that in 2018, 512 women died out of 100, 000 births in Nigeria, adding that  it was lack of access to family planning that contributed to such high rate of deaths.

She, however, urged  stakeholders to embark on solution sensitization of family planning through forming synergies with health sectors and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to achieve a desired goal in family planning.
