Distinguished Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, has urged the newly re-elected leadership of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) to place unity, peace, and collective advancement at the forefront of their agenda. He delivered the charge during the 94th Urhobo Day Celebration held at Uvwiamuge, Agbarho, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The 2024 celebration, themed “Awaken Urhobo Spirit for Unity,” drew prominent stakeholders and cultural advocates from across the Urhobo Nation, all reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cultural identity and fostering development.

In his remarks, Senator Dafinone stressed that the incoming UPU administration must intensify efforts to consolidate harmony among Urhobos and champion initiatives that will enhance socio-cultural and economic progress. He described unity as the foundational pillar upon which meaningful and sustainable development can thrive.

The senator congratulated the re-elected President-General of the UPU, Chief Ese Gam Owe, and members of his executive council, noting that their renewed mandate reflects the confidence reposed in them by the Urhobo people. He encouraged the leadership to build on existing achievements and embrace a more inclusive and coordinated governance style.

Renowned for his advocacy for the preservation of Urhobo heritage, Senator Dafinone reiterated his support for cultural development initiatives. He highlighted the annual Urhobo Language Competition—which he sponsors in memory of the late Senator Pius Ewherido—as a key effort inspiring young people to value and uphold their mother tongue.

Reflecting on the UPU’s 94-year legacy, he praised the union’s tradition of resilience, visionary leadership, and unity. He emphasized the need to safeguard these values as the organization navigates emerging challenges and opportunities.

The 2025 Annual Congress, held alongside the celebration, marked a pivotal moment as the outgoing executive council was dissolved and new leaders elected. Chief Owe’s return as President-General was widely viewed as a vote for stability, continuity, and renewed commitment to the Urhobo agenda.

This year’s event reinforced the importance of peaceful coexistence, cultural preservation, and development-focused dialogue across Urhobo communities. Participants expressed optimism that with cohesive leadership and collective effort, the Urhobo Nation is well positioned for greater progress and prosperity.
