The government of Ghana has announced plans to change the name of the country’s main aviation gateway from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
The decision was disclosed on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, during a parliamentary leadership media briefing ahead of the resumption of the ninth parliament.
According to Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, the Transport Ministry will present a bill to parliament to formally approve the renaming.
Under Ghana’s legislative process, any official name change for a state facility must be passed into law before taking effect.
The proposed change follows long-standing public and civil society debates over the current name, which honours Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a military figure associated with the 1966 overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Supporters of the renaming argue that the new name better reflects Ghana’s democratic values and national identity. Parliament is expected to consider the bill in the coming weeks as part of its legislative agenda for the new session.
