Rt. Hon. (Engr.) Victor Ochei, candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Delta North Senatorial District, has called for renewed commitment to peace, unity, justice, equity and accountable governance as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Ochei, in a message commemorating the anniversary on Thursday, felicitated with Nigerians at home and abroad, describing the occasion as both a celebration of the country’s journey and an opportunity for sober reflection.
He noted that Nigeria, despite its vast human and natural resources and decades of political and economic challenges, had continued to demonstrate resilience since gaining independence.
According to him, the challenges confronting the country, including poverty, insecurity, unemployment, ethnic and religious tensions and declining living standards, require renewed commitment from both leaders and citizens.
Ochei said the anniversary should serve as an opportunity for Nigerians to recommit themselves to building a country founded on peace, unity, justice, equity, accountability and shared prosperity.
He stressed that achieving such a Nigeria would require sacrifice, responsible leadership and a governance system that places the welfare and dignity of citizens at the centre of public administration.
“At 66, Nigeria deserves a renewed sense of purpose,” Ochei said, urging governments at all levels to judiciously deploy public resources, strengthen democratic institutions and create an environment where citizens can live with dignity, security and hope.
He also called on Nigerians to remain patriotic and united in their determination to build a peaceful, prosperous and just nation that future generations would be proud to inherit.
