Kylian Mbappé has written a new chapter in football history after becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, overtaking Argentina legend Lionel Messi to claim one of the sport’s most prestigious individual records.
The France captain concluded the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an astonishing total of 22 career World Cup goals, surpassing Messi’s previous record of 21 goals. The achievement marks another milestone in Mbappé’s remarkable career and further establishes him as one of the greatest players the game has ever produced.
Mbappé reached the historic mark after an outstanding campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he scored 10 goals to lead France’s attack throughout the tournament. Although Les Bleus fell short of lifting the trophy and eventually finished fourth after losing to England in the third-place playoff, the French forward’s individual brilliance remained one of the defining stories of the competition.
What makes Mbappé’s achievement even more extraordinary is the efficiency with which he reached the record. The French superstar scored his 22 World Cup goals in just 22 appearances, averaging one goal per match on football’s biggest stage. By comparison, Messi scored 21 goals in 34 World Cup appearances across six tournaments before concluding his World Cup career.
The previous record belonged to German striker Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals in 24 World Cup matches. Klose held the record for more than a decade after surpassing Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Mbappé’s remarkable scoring run has now moved Klose into third place in the all-time rankings.
Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário remains one of the tournament’s greatest forwards with 15 goals, while Germany’s Gerd Müller and England captain Harry Kane share 14 goals each. French legend Just Fontaine, famous for scoring 13 goals in a single World Cup in 1958, also remains among the competition’s greatest goalscorers.
Football fans across Africa and around the world have celebrated Mbappé’s latest accomplishment, with many describing it as one of the greatest individual achievements in modern football. His pace, composure, finishing ability and consistency have made him one of the most feared forwards of his generation, while his performances at successive World Cups have continued to strengthen his reputation.
Since making his World Cup debut as a teenager in Russia in 2018, Mbappé has consistently delivered on football’s biggest stage. He played a crucial role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, continued his outstanding form at the 2022 tournament and once again demonstrated his exceptional quality during the 2026 edition.
His latest record also reflects the evolution of a player who has combined natural talent with experience, leadership and an unwavering desire to compete at the highest level. Now serving as France’s captain, Mbappé has carried the expectations of his country while continuing to produce memorable performances against some of the world’s strongest teams.
Beyond the statistics, the record is likely to fuel debates over where Mbappé ranks among football’s greatest-ever players. Comparisons with legends such as Pelé, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are expected to continue, but his achievements at the World Cup have already secured him a unique place in football history.
The FIFA World Cup has long been regarded as the ultimate stage for footballers to prove themselves, and few players have embraced that challenge as successfully as Mbappé. His ability to consistently score against elite opposition under immense pressure has set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
For young footballers across Africa and other parts of the world, Mbappé’s journey serves as an inspiration. His rise from a talented youngster to becoming the highest goalscorer in World Cup history demonstrates what can be achieved through discipline, determination and exceptional talent.
Although France ended the tournament without a podium finish after losing the third-place match to England, Mbappé’s individual success ensured that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered as the tournament where football witnessed the emergence of a new all-time leading goalscorer.
