Nigeria has officially opened its medal campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after para powerlifter Roland Ezuruike claimed a silver medal in the men’s Lightweight Group A event.
The experienced Nigerian athlete delivered an impressive performance, successfully completing his opening lifts to remain among the leading contenders throughout the competition. His consistency kept Nigeria in contention for its first podium finish of the Games.
Ezuruike came within touching distance of winning the gold medal but narrowly missed out after failing in his final attempt to lift 190 kilograms, a weight that would have established a new Commonwealth Games record.
Despite the unsuccessful final lift, he finished with a total of 153.9 points from his two successful attempts, securing the silver medal and handing Team Nigeria its first medal of the 2026 Games.
The achievement gives Nigeria an encouraging start as the country’s athletes continue competing across various events in pursuit of more medals. It also reinforces Nigeria’s reputation as one of the strongest nations in para powerlifting, a sport in which the country has enjoyed sustained international success.
