Nigeria’s Senate demands urgent rebuild of key highway linking northern trade routes

Nigeria’s Senate has called on the Federal Government to urgently re-award the reconstruction contract for the Bauchi–Ningi Federal Highway, warning that the deteriorating road has become a major threat to lives, trade and economic development across northern Nigeria.

Lawmakers described the highway as a strategic transport corridor connecting parts of the North-East and North-West, making it essential for the movement of people, agricultural produce and commercial goods. They argued that years of neglect have left the road in a dangerous condition, slowing economic activities and increasing transportation costs.

The Senate also directed the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to begin emergency repairs on the most damaged sections while awaiting full reconstruction. In addition, the Ministry of Works was urged to immediately restart rehabilitation work on the highway, describing the project as a matter of national importance.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Abdul Ningi, who said the road, originally built in the late 1980s, has suffered decades of inadequate maintenance. He noted that deep potholes, collapsed pavement and eroded sections have turned what was once a one-hour journey into a trip lasting nearly four hours.

According to the senator, the poor state of the highway has increased the risk of road accidents, exposed motorists to security threats such as armed robbery, and disrupted interstate commerce. Farmers, transport operators and businesses that rely on the route have also been affected by higher operating costs and delays.

The Senate further instructed its Committee on Works to conduct an inspection of the highway, engage with relevant stakeholders and submit recommendations within four weeks. Lawmakers believe restoring the road will improve regional connectivity, strengthen trade and support Nigeria’s broader economic growth agenda.
