The police in Abuja have said they will charge Mr. Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to court for culpable homicide.

The command public relations officer Josephine Adeh, who made this known, said Peter Nwachukwu, since arrested and transferred to the FCT Command’s Homicide Department, for further investigation, would be charged to court as soon as investigation into the matter was concluded.

Adeh, in an interview with a Daily Sun reporter in Abuja, said Mr. Nwachukwu, currently detained at the Lugbe Police Station in the FCT, was arrested after the younger brother to the deceased reported the matter at the Lugbe police station.

Adeh, while assuring that the police would thoroughly investigate the case, said:  “I can tell you that the husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been arrested and is currently in our custody. He was arrested Sunday evening and will remain with us until we conclude investigation because we are investigating the case after which he would be charged to court.”

She added: “We arrested the husband based on the report we got from the younger brother of the deceased gospel singer that he suspected the husband for culpable homicide and we will communicate to you as the case progresses.

“Homicide is a serious case that cannot be swept under the carpet; it is our duty to investigate and charge the matter to the court to decide the verdict.

“We don’t really know what happened but what we are investigating is culpable homicide, which the brother reported.”

But a police source who would not want to be mentioned in print, said that following the transfer of the case to the homicide department, the police were already in possession of a revelation that would aid their investigation.

The source said the police already had a voice recording of the deceased where she narrated her ordeal while on admission at the hospital. In the said voice recording, the deceased was said to have said that her husband should be held responsible if anything happened to her.

The source said that the voice message was a clear indication from the late singer that she was not going to come out of her ordeal alive.

According to the source, the voice message was recorded in Igbo language and had since been translated to English.

Another source who did not want to be mentioned in print said the suspect did not feel any remorse but displaying some arrogance.

The source said: “It was very easy for us to get the suspect arrested after the brother reported the matter to us. We arrested him at their residence at HACO estate. He did not even show any sign that he had done anything wrong. He is even denying that he used to beat the wife and even beat her to death.”

Another police source who appeared very angry about the incident, blamed the family for keeping the matter of domestic violence which their daughter was passing through a secret.

According to the source, the suspect had not been cooperating with the police, what with his having written different statement as to how his wife died.

The suspect who confessed that he had been beating his wife, however, said he did that in the early years of their marriage and had stopped beating her.

Peter Nwachukwu was said to have told investigators that his wife suffered cancer of the lungs which he said was detected at the National hospital and the Gwagwalada Specialist hospital and that she had been on admission at the National hospital for about 21 days before she passed on.

The suspect who said he had problems with his in-laws, said trouble started after the death of his father in-law.

He said he married the deceased sometime in 2008 that he lived with her at HACO Eatate, Abuja, adding that he was the manager of his wife’s ministry.

Coherent with his confessional statement, Mr. Nwqchukwu confessed that his wife never cheated on him.

“I married my wife whom I met in Abuja in 2008. I cannot remember beating my wife. I used to beat her but that was during our earlier life in marriage. I cannot remember how many times I have beaten her but we have settled that matter and I no longer beat her,” he said.

“My wife never cheated on me. I manage Osinashi Nwachukwu ministry.  We live at HACO estate at Lugbe, Abuja. I met my wife in Abuja.

“My wife had been sick and we had been going from one hospital to the other; she was diagnosed for cancer; we spent 21 days in the hospital and awaiting results before she died

“My in-laws are accusing me because we have not been in good terms with them. When the sickness started, I informed the family of my wife and they asked me to bring her to Enugu but I refused. I told them that I would take care of her. I took her to hospital in January and she was admitted for three weeks which can be confirmed from all the tests conducted on her.”
