Shettima Defends Tinubu’s Reforms as Nigeria’s Reserves Rise

Tinubu’s economic reform ‌programme, arguing that the administration deserves recognition rather than criticism for measures aimed at rebuilding Africa’s largest economy.
Speaking at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit in Asaba, Shettima said the reforms have begun to deliver positive results despite the difficult economic conditions inherited by the current administration. He noted that Nigeria is now witnessing stronger investor confidence and improved economic indicators.

According to the vice president, one of the most significant achievements has been the rise in the country’s foreign reserves, which he said have increased to more than $52 billion. He added that Nigeria has moved from a period marked by capital shortages to one attracting greater capital inflows, a development he described as a sign that the reforms are gaining momentum.

Shettima also acknowledged the role of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo in supporting the administration’s economic direction. He praised Soludo for consistently explaining the country’s economic challenges and for publicly backing difficult but necessary reforms, even when such positions were unpopular.

The vice president stressed that economic transformation requires bold decisions and patience, noting that governments across Africa often face criticism when implementing reforms designed to secure long-term stability. He maintained that the Tinubu administration remains focused on creating a stronger and more competitive economy.

Addressing investors at the summit, Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s business environment. He said the government is working closely with state governments to remove barriers to investment, promote enterprise, and encourage both local and international investors to expand their operations in the country.

He added that sustained collaboration between federal and state authorities would be crucial in unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential, creating jobs, and driving inclusive growth.
The vice president expressed confidence that, if the current reform agenda is sustained, Nigeria will continue to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading investment destinations, supported by improving macroeconomic conditions and increasing investor confidence.
