About 13 passengers of a Toyota bus that collided with a trailer were burnt to death on Sunday at 4-Corners junction, Enugu state.
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Enugu state command, Mr Joseph Toby who confirmed the incident to The Nation Newspaper, noted that the accident had occurred at about 10:30pm, near Army checkpoint at 4-Corners junction. The soldiers efforts to rescue the victims were in vain.
It was gathered that the victims were travelling from Imo state to Adamawa state and were attempting to beat the Monday sit-at-home as ordered by Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for the continued detention of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by the federal government, when their bus collided with the trailer.
Report says that most of the passengers were deep asleep, hence could not react quickly. The only passenger that survived was said to have jumped out of the bus window and was immediately rescued and rushed to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu, by Road Safety and Fire service officials who were immediately alerted about the accident by the Soldiers around.
Sector Commander Toby said he cannot tell the exact number of casualties until they are done with work at the scene. He however stated that the victims were burnt beyond recognition and that the charred bodies have been deposited in UNTH mogue.
