Reflections on Senator Dafinone’s declaration for a second term ahead of 2027 Delta Central senatorial election

There are political gatherings that are literally classified as referendums, and there are occasions when the theatrics of politics culminate into platforms for discourses, performance appraisals, symbolic remarks, and positive affirmations that shape the direction of a contest long before elections are held.

In my well-considered assessment, the massive turnout of supporters and APC stakeholders that honoured the declaration event of Senator Ede Dafinone’s second term bid in office was a clear phenomenon of such an unprecedented gathering. The event signaled the coming together of Delta Central bigwigs not just for the celebration of an incumbent senator who has worked diligently for his people but also for strategic unity in big political moments.

The much-talked-about Senator Dafinone’s declaration took place.
on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at Oharisi Primary School in Ughelli, Delta State, from the early hours of the day, the ancient city of Ughelli carried the signature rhythm of a major political event with its attendant massive traffic to bear. From every axis of Delta Central, one could see convoys of vehicles rolling into the venue of the event. Delta APC faithfuls and supporters of the senator dressed in party colors streamed steadily into the venue. Chieftains of the APC in Delta Central, which include the local government chairmen, elected lawmakers, ward executives, women leaders, and youth mobilizers from across the eight local government areas of Delta Central, filled the arena in what became one of the largest political assemblies in the senatorial district in recent times.

An event that has been purposed and intended as the formal declaration of Senator Ede Dafinone for a second term in the Senate quickly evolved into something more profound—a public re-affirmation of the people’s mandate, political confidence, and a broad endorsement from influential stakeholders within the ranks of the All Progressives Congress in Delta Central.

However, what made the event profoundly historic was not merely the crowd, nor even the declaration itself. It was the clarity of the message that emerged from the people who converged in Ughelli, the political headquarters of Delta Central. Leading the pack among notable leaders who echoed their voices in solidarity and endorsement in that momentous occasion was the “Odidimadi of Africa,” himself, former Senator Ighoyota Amori, whose remarks became one of the defining moments of that event.

Substance Over Noise: Why Dafinone Stands Apart from Omo-Agege

Speaking audaciously before party leaders and supporters, Senator Amori delivered what many observers regarded as the clearest political signal of the day. His words were not equivocal, nor were they wrapped in shades of ambiguity. They were deliberate, strategic, and unmistakably firm: “Whether the party eventually adopts a consensus arrangement or proceeds to direct primaries, the APC in Delta Central has resolved to stand behind Senator Dafinone as its senatorial standard-bearer for the 2027 general elections”. Senator Amori’s words ushered in a defining moment of ovation for the supporters of Senator Ede Dafinone and the greater majority of the Delta Central people. For seasoned watchers and good students of Delta politics, the significance was immediately apparent.

Amori’s endorsement carried an unusual weight, not only because of his stature as a respected political figure in Delta State but also because in politics, support from key influential stakeholders often determines the shape of contests before they formally begin. His statement suggested that what was taking shape around Dafinone was not simply endorsement, but consolidation—an alignment of interests, structures, and party sentiment around a single candidacy. Senator Amori’s endorsement signaled continuity, cohesion, and elite confidence in Dafinone’s stewardship of Delta Central’s mandate in the 10th Senate, and therefore he must be re-elected to continue the good work for Delta Central.

Another influential figure who sounded his support openly for Senator Ede Dafinone was business mogul and party chieftain Chief John Oguma. Oguma showered tremendous praise on the senator for his untiring heartbeats for putting Urhobo interests first in all his public engagements. He particularly commended Senator Dafinone for his immense role and intervention in the Okwama Imbroglio.

By the time Senator Dafinone stepped forward to address the crowd. the gathering and to make his formal speech, the tone of the event had already been set. He framed his second-term re-election declaration around service rather than entitlement. He reminded supporters that leadership is not a badge of rank but a burden of service, a philosophy he said had guided his public life. Drawing from his professional background as a chartered accountant and his legislative experience since entering the Senate in 2023, Dafinone pointed to interventions he said reflected his development priorities in areas such as educational support initiatives, ICT centers in schools, installation of transformers in communities, medical outreach programs, and sustained advocacy for strategic infrastructure projects, including the revitalization of the Sapele Seaport and rail expansion initiatives that could boost Delta Central’s economic future.

But perhaps the most interesting point of the Ughelli declaration was not what Dafinone said about himself.
It was what others said about him.
Politics in Nigeria is often loud with ambition but quieter when it comes to collective elite alignment. What happened in Ughelli was different. There was visible organization, coordinated attendance, and broad elite participation that transformed a declaration rally into a symbolic moment of party convergence.

The speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, federal lawmakers, local government officials, senior party executives, and grassroots mobilizers all formed part of the gathering, reinforcing the impression that Delta Central APC has spoken in one voice. In politics, when a senatorial district speaks with unusual clarity, the echoes travel far beyond the venue of convergence.

At the close of the occasion, when guests and supporters gradually dispersed from the venue, the take home from the event was more than applause, chants, banners, or speeches. It was a political message for a new era of advancement and development for the good people of Delta Central.

In the unfolding calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, the second-term declaration day of Senator Ede Dafinone shall be remembered not only as the day he announced his intention to seek another term in office but as the day influential leaders and stakeholders of Delta Central APC publicly closed ranks around his candidacy and re-election with a bold statement.
