Four police officers are in hot water after allegedly extorting N53,000 from Musa Aliyu, the chairman of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the ICPC, during an illegal stop-and-search in Abuja’s Wuse district.
The officers abandoned their posts, set up a rogue checkpoint near Banex, and unknowingly picked on the wrong target. They forced the ICPC boss to withdraw the cash via a PoS operator charges inclusive then split the loot among themselves.
FCT Police Commissioner Ahmed Sanusi called them “a gang of criminals” and confirmed all four are in custody. The gang leader’s confession led to the arrest of the others.
“They are going to be severely punished. Those to be dismissed will be dismissed,” Sanusi vowed.
He also reiterated the IGP’s ban on indiscriminate phone searches and urged residents to report any officer demanding such.
