Less than 30 percent of students out of the total number of 2048 expected matriculating students participated in the 19th matriculation ceremony of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.
A number of students stayed away from the ceremony citing economic reasons and the Easter period.
One of them who preferred not to be named said: “My roommate had to go home to work using the Easter holiday as an avenue to make some money instead of attending the ceremony.”
Many others stayed away from the ceremony for similar reasons. This is despite the fact that they are new students of the polytechnic.
The Rector of the institution, Prof.Stella Chiemeke, in her address, felicitated and welcomed the new students who have just been added to the institution.
“It is a new dawn for all the matriculants,” she said in her welcome address.
She urged all the students to shun any form of indesecent dressing, cult activities and anything that could lead to the deferment of their admission.
Professor Chiemeke further enjoined all the newly matriculating students to adopt the principles of hard work as there is no short cut to success.
All the matriculants were urged to avoid wild parties and focus on their studies as that should be their major pre-occupation throughout their stay on campus.
She warned against cult related activities, saying any student caught involved in cultism will be dealt with by the polytechnic authority.
